North Korea Opens Border Pub to Attract Foreign Tourists

In a notable move to boost its tourism sector, North Korea has opened a large-scale beer pub, the Tumen River Beer House, in the city of Rason, which borders Russia. The new establishment is part of a broader push by Pyongyang to develop its border regions and attract international visitors.

The Tumen River Beer House was inaugurated in early September in a ceremony attended by North Korean officials, as reported by Korean Central Television (KCTV). The project received direct guidance from leader Kim Jong Un, who envisioned a modern pub to cater to international guests. Its strategic location in Rason, a special economic zone, positions it as a key hub for cross-border tourism.

The two-story pub features a distinctive facade decorated with beer foam imagery and is flanked by two oversized barrels proudly displaying the Tumen River Beer brand. Inside, the space is designed with a spacious, comfortable seating area and includes a dedicated section for large groups and parties. All the beer served at the pub is sourced from the local Rongsong Comprehensive Processing Plant.

Russian media outlets have noted that Rason’s Tumen River 11 beer is already being exported to Russia’s Far East, indicating a degree of acceptance among Russian consumers. Analysts view the opening of this pub as a component of North Korea’s local economic development strategy, specifically aimed at attracting Russian tourists.

The initiative comes at a time of increasingly close relations between Russia and North Korea, following the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty last year. This deepened cooperation has led to numerous infrastructure projects along the Tumen River. In addition to the existing railway line, Russia is expected to complete a new road bridge over the river next year. This development is anticipated to significantly increase the flow of Russian tourists to Rason, thereby creating substantial demand for local entertainment and dining services.
