Hanoi has been celebrated as the leading cultural destination in Asia

Its selection among the top 20 global cities for cultural experiences highlights its successful fusion of historical depth and modern energy, alongside a lively cultural scene.

British magazine Time Out recently released its 2025 list of the world’s top 20 cultural hotspots, based on a survey of 18,500 people worldwide about their local cultural experiences and the quality and investment in them. Editors then selected the 20 highest-rated cities.

Paris led the global ranking, while Hanoi impressively secured ninth place overall and first in Asia, outperforming cities like Beijing, Jakarta, and Delhi.

Time Out noted Hanoi’s welcoming and affordable cultural environment, with 82% of locals appreciating the low cost and numerous free activities.

Visitors can enjoy free street performances near the Old Quarter and the live music scene at Hanoi Rock City. A short trip from the center offers cultural events in the suburbs, featuring fashion shows with traditional textiles.

The list surprisingly excluded Japanese cities. Beijing, China, ranked eleventh, recognized for its unique mix of tradition and modernity, with residents valuing the National Centre for the Performing Arts and Tiananmen Square.

Jakarta, Indonesia, came in at thirteenth, known for its innovative museums and community art spaces like Dia.Lo.Gue Artspace and M Bloc Space, as well as its annual festivals, and its affordability similar to Hanoi.

Delhi, India, was the other Asian city, at fourteenth. A high 89% of residents praised its cultural activities as “better and more inclusive,” with the newly opened Humayun’s Tomb museum being a key attraction.

Time Out suggests that today’s cultural cities encompass both historical heritage and new experiences in vibrant, young nations, extending beyond traditional venues to include community events, festivals, street life, and outdoor activities.
